5 Ways to Get made in the Shade

Don't Get Burned this Summer

In the summertime, most of us look forward to spending as many hours as possible basking in the season's good weather. Picnics, pool parties and backyard barbeques are among the joys of summer, but too much time in the sun spells bad news. Sun exposure ages your outdoor furniture, not to mention your skin. It doesn't take long for a few hours in the sun to translate into a nasty sunburn or worse, heatstroke.

What's the Perfect Gift for Mom? You!

Give your time and her home an upgrade.

Moms are sentimental by nature: who else would save clay imprints of your hands, your messy Valentine's Day card, or the woven potholders you made her in seventh grade? Whether or not they're still on display, you can bet that any project you did for her holds a special place in her heart. These gifts last because they come from a special place—the heart of her child.

Feng Shui for Your Front Door

Feng Shui is the art and science of selecting and arranging a harmonious living environment that is in balance with the five elements (fire, metal, earth, wood and water). These elements take on implications of positive or negative energy and this energy is known as Chi (pronounced chee), or more colorfully, "the dragons cosmic breath", although no one really says that anymore.

Pick up the Pieces: From Broken glass to a Sumptuous Mosaic Table

A few years ago, I bought a fabulous outdoor table at the Rose Bowl flea market in Pasadena, one of the world's greatest flea markets. The base of the table was wrought iron, authentically weather and aged, just the way I love. The table featured a glass top.

During renovation of my back yard, when I converted my freestanding garage into an office and debris was strewn all over the place, the glass top cracked. I gave a moment's thought to replacing the glass and then came up with the idea of covering the table top in mosaic tiles, a look I have always admired.

What Does Your Home Say About Who You Are?

The Secrets Your Home Reveals About You
Your Personality Affects How and Where You Live!

Look around your home: what can it tell you about the person who lives there? Are you a neat freak who has organization systems for everything from your shoes to your plates? Are you a creative type who expresses her creativity with vibrant colors and bold furnishings? Or maybe you're more of the conservative type with pastel colored walls and subtle nuances. Whatever your choices, your house speaks volumes about who you are.

Is Your Home Office a Real Office?

Is Your Home Office a help or a Hindrance?
Does Your Home Office Work for You?

A home office can be a luxury, affording you the comfort of working in your pajamas and eliminating the hassle of commuting more than a few feet to your desk. However, if your computer is tottering on a pile of papers on your dining room table and your files are stashed in a cardboard box under the kitchen sink, then you are probably not working at your maximum efficiency.

What Guys Hate About Your Bedroom

Wondering what your home tells others about you? The moment someone enters your house, everything--the walls, the furnishings, the layout, the books, the towels, the spice rack--all start to speak. We can't help it: our homes are ultimately seen as reflections of who we are.

So what is your bedroom saying to others? If you're single (or even if you're not), this is no small matter. You can try to look at it objectively or even ask trusted friends or family for an opinion. But those sources are more than a little biased.
