Relaxation tips for your bedroom - turn it into a retreat!

So I just did this to mine and figured that maybe some of you might benefit as well. So here goes!

Marilyn's tips for a relaxing bedroom

1. Take the glare off and install a dimmer switch. Yeah, it's electrical but I was surprised at how easy it was. Even I could do it! Now I can turn the lights down when I'm getting ready for bed or reading to relax.

2. Color, color, color. I was amazed at how much painting my stark white walls made me feel calmer. Really! Mine is now a dusty blue with accents of tan. Very spa-like.

3. Texture. So a friend of mine said that she upholstered a wall in her house. I had never heard of that but when I saw it, it was just so luxurious. So she came over and showed me how. Now my wall behind my bed is upholstered (with a little padding to make it a little billowy (sp?) and it looks like I have an expensive headboard - way cool!

4. Clutter be gone. I think I saw it on a show or something but they suggested getting all the extra 'stuff' out of your room to help you relax. And it works! I either put all my extra stuff away or threw it away. Now I can just relax and not see something and start thinking about what I have to do.

5. Ceiling fan. Ok, this one was a little trickier than I had first thought, but I still got through it. And now when I sleep at night, I have this constant cool breeze on me and it almost makes me think I'm sleeping at the beach! And yes, I did it myself!!!

6. Chaise lounge chair by the window for reading. You know those old movies with the cool chaise lounge? They always look SOOO relaxed. Well, I put one in my bedroom by the window, and now I spend hours there reading. It's great light, very comfortable and oh so chic!

7. Music is a must. I got these great CDs that play music like they do at the spa, you know - more of the sounds of waterfalls and such? Well, what a way to drift off to dreamland. I start the CD each night before I go to bed and fall asleep usually at the 2nd song - in fact, I don't think I've ever even heard the end of the CD! But since it turns off when it's done, no need worrying about it waking me up in the middle of the night.

I think that's about all I can think of, but I really love my bedroom now and none of this was really very difficult. So I hope you benefit from my experience. Good luck, and relax...

Relaxation tips for the bedroom

These were great tips! I'm redecorating my bedroom. Color is important and all the other things you mentioned are equally important. My favorite, No. 7. I never gave it a thought as I was planning out my decor, etc. Why didn't I think of that? When I was in my teens I would play my records on my "record player" every night to fall asleep (it too turned off after the records had played). Thank you soooo much for reminding me of this. It's a great way to relax and as you said, "drift off to dreamland".

Brenda J. Hutchins I love the chaise lounge idea by the window. I have a sliding glass door and a patio off the bedroom. I think it would really be beautiful in my bedroom with my canopy bed. I loved your other ideas, too!

Canopy or Crown over headboard

The friend that was asking about a Crown over her bed or cornice from her window.........may want to shop in girls bedding. My grandaughter has a very pretty Crown hanging from the ceiling at the head of her bed. It has sheer fabric flowing down. I think it was bought at Penney's. I don't think a woman would like the Princess bedspread, but the Crown would look good. It is a pretty simple ring with the shears. I think using a cornice from the window with sheers would need some more window dressing to look right. Good luck with all your projects and ideas!!

I hope I am logged in correctly. I am interested in builing dresser drawers on each side of my bed, to eliminate dressers in my cramped bedroom. Any suggestions?

Please tell me more about the built in dressers. We are attempting to re-do our bedroom to create a sanctuary from our 3 kids. We have never had the pleasure of buying bedroom furniture. We have always had hand me downs. Ugh. We just bought some GORGEOUS fabric to make a headboard. Our dressers are so hideous, though. How do you do built ins yourself??
