Sewers

Hello Ladies, I have a very 'yucky' smell in my upstairs bathroom. This room is separate from the toilet room nextdoor. The sink and shower/bath are used often, so I know that it is not stagnant water, I can't seem to get rid of this smell. We live out in the country and have a septic tank that drains down a slope under our garden. For 25 years this has required no upkeep, and although I have tried treatments especially for this kind of system (that contain no bleach), the smell doesn't leave! Our downstairs bathroom does not suffer from this problem, and the air vent in the upstairs bathroom sounds as if it is working. There are days when this odor is really nauseating, and I need to spray just to be able to enter into this bathroom. Help !!

Bless your heart! I can't even imagine how frustrating this must be for you. The first thing I need to tell you is that you shouldn't ignore the "nasty" smells coming in to your home. If the are gases coming from your septic tank they can actually be harmful to you and your family. I recomend that you have someone come in as soon as possible to check out the septic tank. It may be something as simple as needing to empty it or you may end up having a leak of some kind in the pipes. Either way this isn't something you should wait on getting some help with. Please let us know what it turns out to be.

Clean out the P-trap

Check the P-trap on the sink drain. Bathroom sink drains will often get a buildup of "pond scum", which produces a foul sulfur smell. Remove the trap (remember to place a bucket under it to catch the water in it). If the trap has a smelly black slime in it, that's your culprit. Clean the trap out (in a different sink :),using hot water and bleach, then reinstall. Run some hot water and bleach down the drain to help clean out any buildup in the downtube.
