I have an interior pre-hung door that won't stay where it is opened. It swings back open. Have tried several things nothing seems to work. The door seems to be close to plumb and level. HELP!!

Door

Depending on where your house is located...I live in the South, and the house is on piers...subsequently, the house is NOT level. Check the FLOOR with a level to see if the floor is indeed level, then open the door, and place a level on the top to see if the door is level. Even though the frame appears level, the door or floor may be the culprit.

You can try adding a screen

You can try adding a screen door closer at the top that will shut the door automatically, or hold it open when you want it open. I think you're house isn't level, so that's probably the easiest solution.

Try shimming the hinges

I'm not sure how the level of your floor or house is supposed to affect anything. But one thing I know for sure - if your door swings by itself, either the frame or the hinges are out of plumb (either that or you've got ghosts).

If it's way out of plumb, the only real fix is to re-hang the jamb and door. But if it's not too bad, you might be able to correct it by shimming under the hinge plates. It doesn't take much - just a piece of paper folded over a couple of times. Sometimes, a double-thickness of paper is all it takes.

If the door is out of plumb *across* the door frame, shim under the jamb hinges. However, you can only shim so much before the door rubs the door frame on the top corner or latch side.

If the door leans in/out of the doorway, shim under the door hinge plates. With the leaning problem, the door will still want to swing when it's part-way open. But you can shim it so it stays in place when it's fully opened. Again, check that in shimming the door plumb, you haven't made it so it can't fit in the doorway.

replacing an old door frame

my daughter needs an old door frame(only one side) replaced. I think I can cut one side out and add a couple pieces of wood to do it. Any suggestions or advice before we tear it apart?
