Small Spaces - HELP!

Hi, I live in a small 1930's cottage and am looking for closet storage solutions that I can install my self (without breaking the bank!) I like the ones from Ikea, but want to build / install some myself to keep the budget down.

I have been pricing cabinets and storage solutions for a while now, as I am in an older home with 0 closet space. I have found that IKEA is the best on prices, as long as you don't plan on moving the items around and you do the pick up yourself. The shipping can cost more than the item. I'm looking at a road trip myself to Atlanta (4 1/2 hour drive) just to keep the cost down for my kitchen. If you have a Big Lots in your area, they are also good on pricing for storage solutions. Another idea if you want to build yourself is to use MDF. It is cheaper than wood and can be painted to match your space. Make simple boxes of various sizes that can be stacked. To keep them in place, drill a hole on the edges and use the small round dowel Biscuit. (my brain just went numb thinking of their exact term). Good luck and let us know what you decided and how it turned out.

There is a special paint for appliances (appliance paint). I am not sure where to buy but you should be able to find it in a home improvement store.
