Help! I have a wood stain!

I have been sanding down my hardwood oak floors on a home I have recently purchased. I noticed there are some places where there are water stains and some dark spots that look like some oil based substance may have stained the wood. I've tried sanding but it doesn't seem to help much. Can anyone help?

Wood Stain Solution

It sounds like you have a really deep stain. If you gave it a shot with a sander and it's still not coming out, then you may have to live with it or replace the board. Don't try to bleach the stain though, because it will eventually damage the wood.

I also have an old home, and personally, I like the stains my original wood floors had...gives it character. There were some planks the original owners replaced that were a bit different color, a deep scratch here or there. Part of the charm of "old" is the character...don't fret, live with it and make up stories of how the beautiful stains got there to begin with. It will add charm to the room!

Just consider it part of the character of the old wood floors. You can try to replace individual planks and resand put matching new wood to old is virtually impossible. Just had our floors redone by a pro....and we like our 100 year old floors, we just got them even, patched a few spot (used wood out of a closet) and put a good grade polyurathane finish on them...the kind they use in dorm rooms. We still have a few spots but love the overall look.
