Your First Tool

If you are in the market for a first tool and don't know what to buy, get a cordless electric screwdriver. My mom got me one when I moved into my first place and it's awesome! I thought I would never use it, but it's great for hanging pictures and fixing things here and there around the house. Some models (liek the one I have) double as a drill. --Rhea

Cordless screwdrivers don't have a lot of power anyway -- I think it's best to get a DRILL/DRIVER. Makita and Ryobi make really good ones that are perfect for women. Get one no less than 18V though so you always have enough power.

It is very important to buy the right tool for the job. We, women, can become easily frustrated if the outcome of our projects get jeopardized by not having the right tools or the skills of how to use them. I recommend tools that are specifically designed for women. Ergonomically designed to be lightweight, durable, and women friendly. I have used tools for a long time and was thrilled to find out there are tools out there for my small hands. From the choices available so far, in a market which is growing, I recommend the tools from Tomboy Tools. Check out their website or find a Consultant in your area. Training to use tools is included. Worth the research!! Good Luck. You can Do It!! SHECAN

Tomboy Tools is an awesome route for tools. You can try them out at your house with someone to help you. Many of the tools are made smaller, and they all have comfortable grips. The selection of power tools is limited, but they have a great drill/driver and screwdriver. Trying what Tomboy has to offer in your house will get you used to the idea of handling the tools - take that experience to the hardware store when you shop for other power tools. Pick up the power tools, run them and hold them for a while in akward or overhead positions that you may have to use them in. Make sure they are comfortable and light enough to actually use. Don't be afraid to be hands on and take your time!! Even if you're a beginner, your money spends the same. If the store doesn't respect that, let them know you are going to go somewhere else, for your tools and the materials you will be needing as you learn more!

The makita and ryobi are great for large projects. I have personally used the 12v from Tomboy Tools. It is the most comfortable, well balanced, and it has a two finger trigger which is a lot easier to use. It is powerful enough most most home improvement and maintenance projects.
