Where do ideas come from?

So where do you get your inspiration? Where do you get ideas for what to do in your house? A magazine? A TV show? A friend's house? But then, once you have an idea - what's the next step? This is the place where you can figure that out. Ask others in the community, help someone out if they have a question. Be a Jane!

Where do ideas com from?

I now have a system for decorating ideas. I actually sit in the space and think to myself or even aloud, how do I want this room to feel? What's wrong or right with the present environment. I measure everything in the room, the windows, doors, etc. I am a list person, so I begin to list the changes I want to make including colors. Then I begin on a quest to research ideas from the internet, magazines, the home center, model homes and the Annual Home Show. I carry a pocket sized notebook to jot down ideas. If changing wall colors, I paste color swatches on the wall. Eventually, that focal point or special change begins my process to redecorating. I take my time. Because I do most of the work myself. I like to begin and complete the space within a reasonable amount of time - money permitting. For example, I redecorated my living room. I painted, removed vertical blinds, installed drapes, installed crown molding, purchased a few pieces of accent furniture, reframed some pictures, added lights and re-upholstered a chair and a bench. I smile every time I enter my NEW living room! What a feeling of accomplishment! The process took about 4 weeks from beginning to end.

It could be a piece of furniture or a paint color. For me, the ideas just come when they come. Though sometimes I need to really look for them and it's times like this that I can spend hours in the magazine section at Barnes and Noble trying to come up with an idea.

Window Treatment Ideas

There are actually a couple really great websites out there right now that can help inspire you with great ideas for window treatments for your home. Actually a few of the websites have tools that can help you visualize what certain blinds or curtains will look like on your windows. The Graber website (which is a brand of window treatments) has a tool that shows you a series of rooms that you can select colors and arrangements for and then select from their line of window treatments to see what they would look like. There is an article over at BlindFINDER.com that discusses these window treatment inspiration websites in detail if anyone is interested. Best of luck.

Magazines

I look at magazines and everytime I see something I like, I tear the page out and put it in a sheet protector in a notebook. This came in really handy recently when we remodeled our home. I knew how I wanted the finished product to look and was able to make it happen by showing my husband and our contractor the pictures. While I only physically did a few of the smaller projects myself (ripped out wood paneling, ripped out carpeting, designed and installed the pantry, etc,) I was involved in the overall project every step of the way (stickie notes and I became best friends.) Next up, the backyard!
