Connecting the dots - joining boards together

When you're building something from scratch out of wood, there aren't usually specific directions telling you what to do. This can at times be scary, but what it really allows you to do is use your creativity. One place you can creatively well... create, is in how you join your boards together. There are numerous options from using fasteners such as nails or screws to more detailed types of joinery such as biscuits and decorative glue joints such as dovetail or finger joints. Do you want to learn more about a certain type of joinery? Do you have specific questions on projects you're interested in building? If so, post them here!

pocket screws

I'm a big fan of pocket screws. I use a Kreg kit to create the pockets. I put a thin bead of glue on the joint, clamp it down, then put in the screws, then the clamp comes off. Now I don't have to have the cabinet sit around overnight waiting for the glue to dry like I did when I just used biscuits.

Where did you get your kit?

We actually just did an episode on http://BeJane.MSN.com (should be live at the end of this month) where we built a cabinet and had to do pocket screws to join the boards together. We wanted to make the joinery such that most anyone could do it without very specific tools (like a biscuit joiner). But when I went to Home Depot to get a pocket joiner kit, the guy looked at me like I was crazy! So we ended up creating our own pocket joinery method where we first drilled in the top board to be joined at 90 degrees, then once the bit caught, angled it to 45 degrees. Then we glued the pieces and screwed a #8 coarse drywall screw into the hole at a 45 degree angle to join the boards together. It's a very basic method of pocket joinery, but I'd still like to try it with the kit. Where did you pick yours up at?

Most any woodworking catalog/online store will have the Kreg kits - Rocklers, Woodworking Warehouse, etc. I've seen the basic Kreg kits at several Lowe's stores, so I assume it's carried chain-wide. Sears has their own Crafstman pocket hole jig that's less expensive than the Kreg and works pretty well.
