Porcelain Tile vs Travertine

I am having the floor replaced in my moms kitchen and would like a natural stone like travertine. Does anyone know if this will hold up to wear as well as regular tile. I would like something that is easy to clean and can handle heavy traffic.

Any suggestions?

Might want to lean away from stone...

Amelia,

I've laid both poreclain and specifically travertine tiles in my home and I have to be honest that while I much preferred the look and feel of the stone, the porcelain was much easier to clean.

If you do decide to go with any stone make sure that it is sealed really well before you do any cooking on it as travertine tends to soak up oil like crazy and once on it, it's pretty much going to stay that way. Also if it's not honed and there are some pock marks, make sure that when they grout the floor they fill all of those in for two reasons. One, it will help to stabilize the floor just in case it has any week spots and two you really don't want to have to scrub those holes clean. Trust me it's no fun.
