single to a double

I am hoping to make a single (dumb old horizontal)electrical outlet into a double. I have all the neccesary items, but now that I look at the wires, I'm a little nervous!

I have a black, a white and a ground. I can't just split them in half and connect to each receptical... So do I need to run more wires or can I connect them to each other?? What do I have to do?

Thanks!

I, as everyone else I see, hesitate to offer advice with this. The wires are correct. you need to jumper them from one gang to the other. Now for the questions. What size box are they in? Will it accomidate the aditional outlet? Is the old outlet simply a single outlet and you are replacing it with a double outlet that's attached together? If so you shouldn't need to do anything, the outlet should come with busses that need to be broken to isolate the outlets. In your case I'd call someone in your area to look at what you have and go from there. Luck, Gerald

If you do end up calling someone in, make sure you watch what they are doing and ask a lot of questions. I always look at hiring someone to do work in my home as a lesson that comes with the benefit of having someone else do the project this time because next time I know I can probably do it myself. (I even offer up to be the labor if it is necessary -- that way you learn by doing!)
