painting flames

I love doing different paint techniques. I've done faux finishes, crackle, stripes and even projecting a fabric patern on the wall and hand painting it onto a base coat. Now I want to tackle something a bit more a challenging... flames.

I found this picture of a Hot Wheel room at Sears a few years ago and I had to wait until my little boy was old enough and had his own room. Now's the time.

I remember watching Trading Spaces from England and they did curvy lines by using some sort of crepe paper painting tape. Has anyone seen such a thing in the US?

I'm googling "crepe paper tape" but I can't tell if it's what I'm looking for!!! I've even tried googling for car paint masking tape, but I think it might be too sticky for painted walls.

Paper masking tape

You'll need 1/8" paper masking tape to make the flames like the picture. You may have to get it at an automotive paint store or a specialty paint store. It's just like regular painters' tape or masking tape, but it's very thin and can be curved without causing creases. Good luck with the paining, it will be amazing!

I'm going to try to get this done this weekend. I've got the stretchy tape and I found 1/2" tape at the automotive paint store. I looked at the 1/8" but I think it would just be too thin to be really useful. We'll see how it goes!

It took all weekend, but I finished the paint job in his room. I even took time to do all of the shopping, but it will be a couple of days before I can get all of the furniture put together. In the mean time I thought I'd post pictures of the process.

After researching this, I realized there were two ways to do flames... free hand painting, or masking. I decided that I was better at masking than freehand so here is my masking technique.

The final picture shows the stripe wall as well. I did not go into explaining that since it is just standard stripes, layered over each other.

After painting solid blue walls, we chalked lines freehand

Then I painted a line over the chalk with the highlight color making sure it was more than 1" thick

Then I used the stretchy masking tape and masked over the paint

I then painted over both sides of the tape with the highlight color to seal the edges

After priming and painting the inside of the flames, I painted over the outside of the masking with dark blue and pulled it all off. Last was a minimal amount of touch up.

He is as excited as an 8 year old boy can get! The biggest compliment he gave was "wow, they're perfect!"
