Vacuum Cleaner for Hard Floors

Does anyone have any suggestions for good hard floor vacuum cleaners? I've got tile in the kitchen, but I'd also like it to work on carpet occasionally. I don't have a lot of carpet, so mostly I'll be using it for hard floors/tile. I've seen some vacuum cleaner reviews that mention the Bissell 1867-7, and I wonder if that one's any good. Thanks for your help.

My sister swears by the roomba. Most of her house is hardwood floors, a few area rugs, travertine tile and a few rooms with wall to wall. She uses the roomba in all but the rooms with wall to wall. I have to admit that it works really well. One of the nice features is that you can program it to run when you're out of the house. The downside, you need to make sure that everything is picked up off the floor it's turned on.

I tried the roomba...if you have any area rugs with fringe on the edge it can't deal with it. I spent more time "preparing" the room for roomba than I did with a manual vacuum!

I have had terrible problems with Bissells and recently switched to a Hoover, which works great. Plan to spend at least $150 for a good one. I got mine through amazon and got a lower price.

I have the Oreck XL upright

I have the Oreck XL upright vacuum cleaner and it works well on both hard floors and carpet. This is one of the main reasons we chose it. It is also super light weight so i don't have to fight with it every time I need to vacuum. I costs a little more ($300) than some of the standard things you can get at Target or Best Buy, but my last Hoover had to have belts replaced all the time and died in about 2 years. I spent more than $300 on that piece of junk and have nothing to show for it. This one has more than made up the cost and I've had it about 5 years.
