Upholstered Headboards

I'm interested in making the headboard pictured on your site. It's the tufted rectangular one. In the picture it looks like there is a a boarder created a few inches in from the edge. How is the border created? I'd like to make the head board without the tufting and use sivler tacks in the indented area that shows up in the picture a few inches in from the edge. I've seen a headboard done like this and it looked fabulous. Will 2 inch foam be too thick to use tacks and where can I find silver colored upholstery tacks?

How to make a tufted headboard

Kate,

If I am looking at the right picture (there are two similar looking ones on that page) the first thing you will need to do is to prepare 2 pieces of wood. The way that they created the "frame" around the edge was by upholstering a solid piece then attaching the tufted one to it. As for the silver tacks holding the tufting, in order to get the look you are looking for and for it to be functional, you will have to actually tuft the headboard and then attach the tacks to the tufted area. Though you may be able to find buttons that will take the place of the tacks. Either way you may want to consider attaching them with upholstery thread and possibly some glue as they will have to withstand the force of your head up against them.

As for the 2" thick foam, definitely consider it because you will need the thickness to make the tufting better.

Hope this helps.
Hug 'n hammers,

Heidi

The best priced foam I've found is in wholesale district. We have one here in Los Angeles and it's soo much cheaper as is the fabric.
