baseboard help needed

I need some opinions. I just bought my home, it's my first!! The baseboards, doors, casing, and window sills are all a dark wood....maybe a dark walnut or antique walnut. I have painted a beige in the majority of my living room & hallways, and a deep red as an accent wall. My furniture is rustic. The couch and love seat are distressed leather. The coffee table, etc are pine. I need to update the baseboards. They are old and small. I'm wanting a taller baseboard. My dilemma is this: should I stay with the dark color (I won't need to change the casing/doors) or should I change to a lighter wood?

You'll probably want to get pre-primed baseboards and paint them a color you like. My guess is you'll want to choose an off-white. Be sure to caulk the top and corners of the baseboard after you install (before you paint). This makes a tremendous difference, and gives a professional looking finish. I've done this in several houses.
