Love the home I'm in? Bah humbug!! What home!

Hi. I am a 55yr.young disabled veteran with a huge 110 yr. old house that I bought 3 years ago. Little did I know when I bought it I would be disabled today. I don't know where to turn. I want to make this place comfortable, pleasant, cheery but it is not possible. There are no sheleves, cupboards, extra storage places, unless I wAnt to put stuff in a musty, yucky basement or a roasting attic that is much too difficult to get to for me. I guess my main problem is trying to get help decorating. I bought this place as an inheritance for my daughter but she is too busy to help too. I don't know what to do to decorate I am lost. I cannot even match paints. Please, rescue me!!! I have no place for anything and no place it is!! All the junk has gravitated to my room and I don't like that and I cannot (physically) get it out of there. I had the squatters from hell here last year and they dumped all the junk from the junk room in my room when I was hospitalized. Oh, it is all too much for me. What can I do. I have already prayed and prayed I hope you are the answer to my prayers. I have to make room for my wheelchair and walker and there they sit in my dining room, see what I mean. My three cats and dog, if they had enough wherewithall would probably have abandoned this ship long ago, but I am grateful they are still with me, hairs in the paint is nothing neew to me lol. Yours truly, mountofchrist

Take it a step at a time

Hi, we just bought an 85 year old fixer upper. The previous owners were elderly and could not keep the home up for the last 20 years, so there's been a lot to do. We made a list of everything to be done. Then, we prioritized them. Every week, we reprioritized. Priotization is 5 categories: Emergency, This Month Priority, This Season Priority, This Year, and "Eventually". If it's not an Emergency or This Month, I don't think about it unless we're reviewing the list. One other thing: Pick one room to fix completely. That's the room you go to when the rest of the house is overwhelming. If you like to cook, do the kitchen. If you like your living room, do that. If you need a quiet bedroom to relax in, start there. Pick another room to be the junk room. Throw everything else in there and close the door. Only take things out of the junk room if you have a permanent home for it. No home, it doesn't come out.

the beginning is always the hardest...

I have to agree w/ciera. Taking one step at a time is the best thing to do. I am still in the middle of redoing my entire (tiny) house, but let me tell you, everything can look so cluttered! Not only this, in the middle of my "projects" I left on a business trip. Didn't have a good welcome home. So even though half my house is still a mess (I am claiming sanctuary in my bathroom from the rest of the house) lol! I decided to focus on one room at a time. I only do small projects in that particular room, and let me tell you, the beginning is always the hardest!!! It just seemed like so much to do! But I broke the room down (dining room) in tiny sections, and voila!!! I have cleared my entire dining room in one week and a half! Well, it may seem like a long time to clear one room to anyone, but to me, it was time well spent w/out stress or frustration!! Yay! But I hope this helps...next, how to decorate my dining room! :)

Start small so you do not

Start small so you do not become frustrated more than you already are. Enlist the help of "World Changers" or "Habitat for Humanity", or some friends to help you out. There are a lot of good people who will help you if you ask. Trying to do all you need done by yourself and having a disability as well is overwhelming.Good Luck to you!
