This is quite an undertaking. We did this in our 1900s farm home in mn. Let me tell you not fun. You need to install "drain tile"...and then have it lead to the sump pump and have the sump pump dump outside your home thru a basement window. Unfortunately, before you can even start this you will need to have this inspected by someone who knows foundations. THis is well worth it....due to the settling and cracking issue you could face some serious foundation issues which could literally take the home off the foundation. It may be as bad as having to have the entire house "lifted" and a new foundation poured...its done quite frequently here in the midwest....Call a professional FIRST for an evaluation on the stability of your foundation...then call another professional for cost for redoing the basement with drain tile...then price it out yourself...you may find...unfortunately as we did ..it was cheeper to have someone do most of it for the drain tile as the entire floor had to be jackhammered out...new draintile laid...and cement cut...we didn't have the jackhammer or cement saw...we did help with the carting out of cement...to cut costs... You may also have to dig outside your foundation to lay a protective plastic along the foundation to prevent more water from seeping in.... Get an estimate...get an idea...then you can see where you can put your labor in to save some money. Good luck.OH..PS..our entire basement was replaced with drain tile...walls reinforced and sealed, cement and sumppump for about 8,000 just for reference...but we live in the Midwest.

The DRAINTILE suggestion is a good one. You can get some good preventative advice at http://www.b-dry.com/wet-basement-analyzer.html
