I Kill Plants

I bought these shrubs thinking that they would need minimal work and I have just killed them all! (see previous post for the BEFORE shots. I watered them regularly, they got a lot of sun; I thought I knew what I was doing this time, but it appears I am clueless after all. Can anyone offer some advice to a novice gardener?

Cris "Jane" Willig It looks like from your pictures that you planted an aborvitae bush.I have found that sometimes they are hard to get started. I don't know where in the country you are but I am in Mn. This plant when not well established can have trouble with the winter sun along with other evergreen bushes. It can get scorched in the winter. Also you said you watered it often. If you water light but often it causes the roots to grow toward the surface which is not good. You want to water well and less often with at least 1" of water. If you use a sprinkler you can put a empty tuna can out by the bushes and when it is full you know they've gotten a inch of water. Also overwatering can cause the same problem as underwatering. The roots rot and they can no longer obsorb water causing the plant to die from water starvation. It is best to match your planting to the environment. If it is natuarally a dry environment then find a plant that loves dry conditions. Also native plants to your area will do best as they are right at home.Good luck and don't give up. The rewards are worth it. Cris

I saw the shrubbs and remembered that when we planted evergreens my wonderful mother in law gave us some sulfate of ammonia to help plants stay green and healthy when they were getting established. We took a small handfull for each tree/shrub and sprinkled it around the base of the plant, worked it into the soil and then watered heavily. Now we use a soaker hose and are blessed with emerald green beauts. We also live in the N.W. and have the ideal soil, it helps to research the plants you want and where they thrive (light/soil/water/and how much room they need to be happy). Hope that might help, also it might be worth it to get a book about your region and the plants that do the best there. That way you can set yourself up for sucess and enjoy gardening.
