RECOVER HOT TUB COVER

My hot tub cover was badly sun damaged, ugly and I am newly divorced so do not have $400.00 for a new one. So, I purchased some marine grade vinyl at a fabric store and recovered it myself. Here's how: Items needed: Marine grade vinyl (cost $20.00) Rivet tool (cost $20.00) 3/16, 1/8" grip aluminum rivets and aluminum washers (cost)$10.00 drill and 3/16th" bit piece of scrap board spring clips (8 or 10 that you may have lying around) for temporary use. Center and trim vinyl sheet and clip in place temporarily with spring clips of some sort. Starting 4 inches from one corner, fold vinyl around old cover edging/skirt. Place scrap board underneath it and drill hole. then place rivet head through hole. Place washer over rivet hhead from bottom side and use rivet tool to crimp in place. Place subsequent rivets about every 4 inches. Leave corners free so you can pull out any slack in material, then finish corners last. * using aluminum rivets and washers is important as they will not rust. Using a washer on the backside is important as you are joining soft materials, and this way the rivet won't pull out. The rivet tool takes considerable force to set the rivet so I actually did this sitting on a low stool with the bottom handle of the rivet tool braced on some padding on my knee and used my hands on the upper handle. You can adjust your body position according to your size and strength to deliver the force necessary. I did it as described as I am accomodating a broken elbow on my left side. End result is not a factory finish, but a "custom" finish that is definitely less unsightly and protects your cover for several more years of use until you have to do it again!
