Help! Removing linoleum from hardwood floor

I've seen the tip to use a heat gun or a really hot hair dryer to loosen the linoleum - what about all that black, sticky adhesive underneath? I'm not sure how to remove it without damaging my hardwood floor underneath - could someone please help me? Thanks!

Removing linoleum

continue with the heat gun and putty knife then you just have to sand the rest for refinishing. start out with a heavy grit for the glue that's left & use it only there. then use a finer grit to finish up. lots of sweat and tears. Sorry.

In removing the old linoleum, I discovered old, yucky tiles underneath. Thanks so much for your help - I can't wait to get to the point where I can sand - I can see the beautiful wood peeking through!

Another option for upping sticky glue

Another option to strip the old adhesive from your floor is to use an adhesive remover. You will put it on the hardened glue and it will then transform it back to it's paste or liquid state - at that point it should be easy to scrape off with a scraper. You should follow the manufacturer's instructions on how long to leave it on before scraping. And be sure to have very good ventilation in the room before using the remover. Good luck!

The adhesive underneath the tiles is very thick - I didn't know that they had a remover for this stuff. As soon as I get the rest of the linoleum and tiles up, I'm going to try the remover - I'm halfway there! Thanks so much for your help and encouragement!

I have the same thing. My house is 104 years old though, and the original floors are still there, just with linoleum over them in the kitchen. I was worried that I would need to pull out everything and start from scratch. Let me know how everything turns out!

Have patience. It's a messy, tedious job, but at least you have the reward of nice wood underneath.
