I'm a renter so I've always been limited to what I can change about my apartment (despite the coolness of my landlord!). Being such, I've made a few minor adjustments to my place to my place that have really maximized the space. My two biggest hindrances have been: small spaces (not a very large apartment) and small budget. Here are some of the ideas that might help you if you're in the same boat:
1. Cover large unattractive wall spaces with painter's canvases. It's cheap art and you can design whatever you want. I painted simple squares or stripes on mine (which measure 5x3) and covered my living room walls and my office space wall. Or, you can purchase a favorite fabric and staple gun it over the top (like a present) and hang. In either case, all you need is a canvas, painter's tape, brushes, acrylic or latex paints, and/or fabric and a staple gun (or hot glue will do in a jam).
2. Install shelving in spall closets. I only have one closet in the entire apt., so I installed some extra racks from Closet Maid and extra poles to hang closets. With some smart folding and hanging tactics, I fit my entire wardbrobe, linens and extra beauty products in this closet. Way cool!
3. In the bedroom...starting with stark white walls and a dingy overhead bedroom light, I made a few adjustments to make my bedroom sexy! No paint required...I bought an inexpensive capiz shell wind chime at a discount store and nailed it to my ceiling around the light fixture using wire brackets. The room now has a beautiful, dimmed pink glow that makes the room look as if it was painted. Neat, huh? Next, I used the space to make my bed the focus, angling it towards the door and making it looking very grand with silk duvets, fluffy pillows and sateen sheets. A small investment, but hey, it's your bed! Behind the bed, I took a small decorator's table, topped it with some of my favorite books and stacked it all with a sexy lamp that I can use for accent lighting. Flanking either side of the lamp, I bought two inexpensive flower buckets and filled each with my favorite silk flowers. Keep the flowers in place using floral foam. Just line the bottom of the bucket with it and stick the flowers right in. Cover it all to the top using artificial moss.
I've got more to come as I get a little more creative. Hope these help anyone out there with the same issue!
