How do I dedicate a line from circuit box to one outlet- for my computer?

My computer seems to be sharing the circuit switch with my furnace. When the furnace fires up (it does this automatically when the temp in the house drops below the minimum degrees I set for it), my computer slows. This change in power is not good for the computer. I need to dedicate a line JUST for the compuer. How do I do this?

An appliance coming on might

An appliance coming on might cause a momentary dip in the voltage. But if it's pulling down the voltage continously, you've got a bigger issue and should call a licensed electrician. Also, many municipalities require that something like adding a new circuit be done by a licensed electrician, because of the shock/fire risk if done improperly.

For the computer, I'd suggest getting a UPS (uninterruptable power supply). A UPS is basically a battery with some eletronics that monitor the line voltage. If the voltage dips (like when a large appliance kicks on), the battery makes up the difference and continues to provide a full 120v to your computer. In case of a power outage, a UPS will power your computer anywhere from a few minutes to an hour or more, depending on the size of the UPS. This allows you enough power to safely shut down your computer, at the least, or even to continue working till the power comes back on, with the larger UPS's.

Jeffe- Thanks for your help. I liked your idea about the t.v. cabinet & will do just that- thin blocks to hold up shelf without nails, etc. I was afraid I'd have to call an electrician, as you said. I DO have a back up UPS for my computer, but I still think the darn puter needs its own line. Like my mom said, "it isn't the initial cost- its the upkeep"- on most big ticket items (cars, houses, computers, horses, yadda, yadda). Thanks, again, for all your good suggestions & advice. I love this site! Marcy
