repairing sheetrock so i can reinstall anchors for a towel bar

so, i decided to fix a loose towel bar, no biggy. Huh!!!! pulled the anchors out, tore the sheet rock and so of course the new wingy kinds i bought are too small cause of the hole. i don't think the solution could be as easy as buying bigger wingy things. i think i have to patch the hole first (1 to 1 1/2" diameter). plus it is a wallpapered wall and i don't want to have stuff show outside the edge of the plate. have i made any sense???????????

You could *maybe* fix a 1"

You could *maybe* fix a 1" hole by carefully building up multiple layers of spackle. But at 1-1/2", you really need to cut a "plug" to fill it, plus drywall joint compound.

Faced with this repair on a wallpapered wall, I'd consider mounting a piece of wood, painted or stained to match the trim, and then mounting the towel bar to this plank. If painting, a piece of 1/2" MDF would be ideal. 5" high looks good, and about 4" wider than the towel bar (2" overhang on each side). If you've got stained wood trim/cabinets, then a 3/4" board of whatever wood your trying to match.

I forgot to add -- with out doing a doing a proper repair of cutting in a drywall patch, mudding and taping, your spackeled over 1" hole will NOT support a new drywall anchor. The spackle patch will crumble or pull out as soon as you try to mount the anchor.
