moving an electrical box

I need to move a ceiling fixture ( a pendant) to be centered over a dining table. I'm not worried about the wiring itself, but how to nail the new box to the rafters. Even at an angle, the box is too small to permit me to nail it.

Do you have access from the attic? If so, just nail a 2x4 between the two nearest ceiling joists. This will allow you to place your light exactly where you want it. If you don't have easy attic access, there are retrofit boxes for ceiling fans that work well. The easiest ones have a threaded bracket that fits between the joists. To install, just cut a hole in the ceiling where you want the light, insert the bracket up into the ceiling and turn the threaded section until it's snug between the joists. Attach the junction box, install the wires, and you're done.

Thank you Jeffe. I used the 2x4 and it worked just fine, I bought a new box and just moved the wires. I capped the old box with a circle thingy.
