shortening over the stove cabinets

I want to add a microwave with light and exhaust over my new stove. The microwave instructions say the bottom of the microwave should sit under the cabinet 16". My over the stove cabinet is 12" from bottom of the cabinet to bottom of the range hood. I need to shorten the cabinet 4". In other words, I need the microwave to sit even with the two cabinets on either side of the range hood. We are 4" too short. How do I shorten the top cabinet? It looks hard to do, but have seen it done on those home improvement shows. Does anyone have an idea hoe to do this, or should I call in a professional? Thanks.......

Shortning cabinets

Unless you have individual cabinets bolted or screwed together you have a fair amount of work ahead of you. You probably have what's called "face frame cabinets". That means the cabinets are made of some type of venier or plywood with a wood face frame attached to them. If this is the case the first thing you need to do is remove the cabinets from the wall. They should all be part of the same unit (from corner to corner). then you remove the face frames & remove the bottom you need to raise. It should be attached with staples & glue in a dado joint (tricky). Now cut a new dado joint 4" higher up & reinstall the cabinet bottom. Next you need to remove the pocket screws holding the bottom face frame on & mount it 4" higher. It's now ready to rehang. Reatach the face frame to the cabinet then rehang the cabinet. The doors now need to be cut down. Do this or buy a matching set that fits & rehang the doors. Now hang the microwave & run the vent & wires. The microwave should cover the old dados in the cabinets so no fuss. Enjoy!!!
