Damaged Plaster Walls and Ceiling

My house was a rental for 10 years and I am seeing areas that were badly damaged that are just now showing up after 6 years. One is water damage around the exhaust fan in the kitchen, another is a large indentation in the plaster below my kitchen window, and third is a large lump of some kind of patching material in the bathroom. The kitchen also has about a 1/4 to 3/8" crack across the ceiling, which I would like to patch so it does not show, if that is possible, since I am getting ready to paint and put up crown molding in the kitchen. I am used to drywall and can patch that easily, but am uncertain how to patch plaster, as it appears to be thinner and more delicate. Help! Robyn Sehy rsehy@yahoo.com

Robyn, the first thing you'll need is some fiber mesh tape. It should be avaliable at your local home improvement center. Now get yourself a sack of plaster & have at it. It's actually conciderably more durable than your drywall & quicker to patch. It only requires one coat & the texture coat may be applied right over it imediatly. Now for the patches you'll need a piece of what's called "blue board" Other than that you'll find that plaster's very close to drywall with the only exception being you go against the seams rather than with them. enjoy!!!
