molding style ideas?

I was wondering if anyone knew where I could look for inspiration in replacing my house's builder grade molding. I do have a ranch, but it's in an eastern US neighborhood of older houses and the cheap, thin molding really sticks out like a sore thumb. I don't want to do something grossly inappropriate like flutes and florettes, but I would like to upgrade the molding (and do the work myself). I'm having a very hard time finding pictures or directions, though, I could use as a recipe book. Also I don't trust myself to pick a style that's considered "appropriate" with a ranch house, having very little DIY experience. Any tips appreciated! Thanks so much!

I'm sure you've looked at Lowe's or Home Depot, but have you thought to look at an architectural salvage store?

My first thought would have been to add a molding that's less than an inch wide about an inch or so above the existing molding. But then I started to wonder, unless you really like the look of wood, what about either painting the wood to match the wall colors so it completely disappears or take it off completely and finish the walls smoothly. A very sleek modern look. Now don't get me wrong. I absolutely love stained wood trim and lots of it. We're in the process of finishing a Queen Anne style Victorian Revival home. I also adore the clean lines of Mid-Century style and was glad to hear you didn't want to choose a style of trim that wouldn't be appropriate for you home. But then you didn't say you had a mid-century home. I guess I think mid century when I hear ranch since I grew up in one. Give me a bit more info and I'll be able to help out more and maybe find some links that will help.
