My icky white, damaged laminate kitchen countertops

My house is 30 years old and the last kitchen update was back when "cute and country" was the decor of choice (not mine!). I plan to strip the wallpaper and paint the cabinets and walls to brighten things up. We also plan to tile the floor b/c the vinyl flooring is shot. Our appliances are brand-new (I know, we should have replaced them last instead of first, but the dishwasher broke and Maytag was having a GREAT sale!) OK, this brings me to my question. I just bought the BeJane book yesterday and saw a kitchen counter project that consists of putting a thin concrete finish over existing tile countertops. My question is, will this work with laminate as well? We've been wanting to experiment with concrete countertops but I've been leery of doing it from scratch ourselves. It seems to me this would be a great way to see if we can live with concrete countertops when we build our dream home. What do you think?

I think you can do this over your existing laminate countertops though I would add one step. Start by scratching up your lamintate countertops then attach a layer of 1/4 to 1/2" cementified board like Hardi Backer with mastic and nails to the surface. You will probably also want to fill in all of the seams with mesh tape and mastic. Once that's dry you can probably just move on the the cement.

The reason why I think that is probably necessary is the fact that most laminate countertops are not as rigid as tile countertops and the flexibility of it might cause some issues with cracking of the surface. If you were to be putting down tile you would need to do this step as well for the same reason.

Hope this helps! Please let us know how it works out and don't forget to post pictures while you're doing it and once it's finished so that other women out there can see how to do this to their countertops.

Using the Hardi Backer

The existing laminate has a bullnose edge. How would I deal with that if I use the backer board? Teresa If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.

Color for concrete

Be aware of what kind of concrete you use. Bagged concrete mix from the home improvement store has big rock aggregate in it and it will be hard to make smooth. I work for a company that makes and sells concrete countertop materials. We have special concrete countertop mix. The aggregate is MUCH smaller and is more light weight and easier to smooth and level. You can also add color to your concrete (no matter what kind you use). Also be sure to seal the concrete and apply a foodgrade beeswax to the sealer to protect it. Good luck with the project. I am looking forward to seeing how it turns out! DCsurfaces.com

Those are great tips! Thanks for adding them. Any ideas on where she can go to purchse the "special concrete countertop mix" or if there is anything else special to know about it?

DCsurfaces has all the concrete countertop materials. The easiest way to view pictures or make an order is at www.DCSurfaces.com. (I work for this company, if you call, most likely you'll be speaking to me.) We have the countertop mix, colors, glass aggregates, sealers, wax...everything that is needed to make concrete countertops. We also include written step-by-step instructions and we're avaiable for tips, advice and assistance throughout the project. I love when we fabricate concrete countertops and I love teaching others about it. It is a project any Jane can do! www.DCsurfaces.com

Here is one of our latest concrete countertops. This one was very simple: basic gray, straight edges, drop-in sink. www.DCsurfaces.com
