Water in the toilet

I am trying to paint my bathroom. I need to take off the toilet tank to paint behind the toilet. Ok.......so I follow Jane's advice. Step A....turn off water.......flush toilet holding handle down to drain. I know the water was off, the water doesn't fill up but it doesn't drain the bowl and I am left with about an inch of water in the tank what is it that I do about that?

because of the lip of the gasket in the bottom of the tank, it won't completely drain. Just use a sponge or towel to soak up the rest of the water.

That being said, I don't bother removing the tank to paint behind it, since I found these skinny little pin rollers at the home store. They're only an 1" in diameter and I've yet to come across a toilet that they wouldn't fit behind.
