I need a drill...which one though??

Hi, I'm in market for a drill, I'm just not sure which one. I don't plan on doing anything to extensive (yet) but I do want to able to hang curtain rods, etc. I'm leaning towards Cordless, but I'm not sure which brand though. I have a few in mind but was wondering what the other "janes" use, and why. I've heard that keyless chucks are the way to go or is that standard with new drills? Also, I've been told that the amount voltage matters with regards to power. I've also been told a metal chuck is better than a plastic chuck...and I could go on and on with what I've been told. I basically need a good reliable drill. Not something that will break my wallet, and not something that will fall apart in the near future. Any recommendations? I'm actually kind of excited about getting my first drill...it's cool you know? Plus, I have this incredible urge to show my daughter that anything is possible!! Can't wait to hear what you all have to say!!! Thanks, Myra

Myra, I am surprised no one has answered your request. Perhaps you should post in the "Tools I have / Tools I hate Forum". Try that. I am sure you'll get some responses. If you are looking for a drill, I personally recommend the Tomboy Tools drill. It is only available through Consultants or their website. It is reasonably priced and it is very simple, lightweight and reliable. It is what I use for everyday home improvement projects ( and my husband too). Our projects include but are not limited to: Installing cabinets, shelves, curtains, building a deck, pergola, a tree house, etc. You can Do It!! SHECAN

Myra,

I completely understand how over-whelming it is to pick out a drill!!! I remember the first drill I bought was a Makita 6.5 volt drill because it was on sale next to the check-out counter for $20. It seemed like such a great deal but I learned really fast that it wasn't.

Here's what I've learned so far around the idea of buying a drill.

1) Voltage is key: you want to make sure you don't buy anything under 9 volts but preferably at least 12-14 volts. The reason why has more to do with the fact that you will probably want to take on more intensive projects as time goes on and you'll want a drill that can grow with you.

2) How much it weighs. When you go to buy a cordless drill you will find that the more power it has, the heavier it is. This is because it needs a bigger battery. (Although you can get a drill with a Nickel Lithium ion battery that will have more power and be lighter.)

As for what I reccomend looking at, I would have to say that you can find some great, inexpensive drills at your local home improvement center such as Ryobi, Skill and Makita. Once you've decided on the voltage and if you have a few choices to choose between, then it's more a matter of the bells and whistles that each one comes with. I personally love it when a drill has a magnetic tray to hold screws and the like while I'm working (I am always dropping stuff ;). Also check to see if it has a level or plumb bubble built in (this will help to make sure you are working straight up and down or level).

Most importantly, don't stress that this will need to be the perfect drill forever. If you do get more involved in doing home improvement you will probably want another more powerful drill down the road and there's nothing wrong with that! I probably own one of every voltage and don't regret a single purchase, except for the 6.5 volt! ;)

Thanks, I had the same question. I need some basic tools and wasn't sure where to start. I have some experince with tools but have never needed to own my own. Now we are buying our first house and it is a fixer-upper, so we sure need some tools now! I was checking out a 12 volt Black and Decker drill today, it was on sale as the centerpiece of a "51 piece tool set" or something for Father's Day. Hm... there's an idea, I could get it "for my husband" for Father's Day! sorry, didn't mean to ramble on and on. thanks again! ~Amanda~ Full-time Workin' Mom and Wife Commonly reffered to as "crafty"
