Need to replace old bathtub, it is cast iron and HEAVY! What should I do?.

I have leaking pipes and a old bathtub. I think they should both be replaced. Does anyone know about putting a new tub inside the old one? Or should I try to get the old cast iron tub out? Also are replacement plastic plumbing pipes as good as copper?

Is this an old clawfoot tub?

Is this an old clawfoot tub? If so, if you are determined to get rid of the tub, see if there's a architectural salvage store in your area - they might even pay you. Also scrap metal - they might remove, and again, might even pay you. Or post on Craigs list to see if someone wants it. But you might want to retain the old bathtub - if it's a clawfoot, you can hire out the painting of the inside to get it shiny... I suppose you can also paint it, though I haven't painted the inside of mine, only the outside. The leaking pipes - if it's a clawfoot tub, the leak won't be the tub, it will be the pipes leading to where the water comes in and leaks. Again, I have no experience, but if you can seek where the leak is, ask your hardware store for how to seal it up...

I had someone come out and refinish this bathtub, it looks just like new. I am amazed at what can be done to make the old finish look like new. It only took about 3 hours to be professionally refinished and cost less than $400.00. jms
