I would love to change the look of my brick on my fireplace. (1970s) The brick is off white with a dark brown brick hearth and mantel and medium grey mortar. I would like to bring some warmth into our family room and make the fireplace a focal point. My questions are: Do you need to use specific paint and or glazes due to the fact the paint is being used on a fireplace? (Heat concerns) And how would you go about painting only the bricks and not the mortar? I have seen fireplaces that have been painted both bricks and mortar and they look fake. I'd like to keep the real brick look. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!!!

I used regular latex paint and a local brand clear glaze. In all of the research done prior to the painting, the primer remained the key to a good product. Let me tell you, the brick sucks the primer right up! My mortar was nasty so paint was my only solution. My paint job is a breeze to vacuum clean and stands up to heat and scrubbing. One gal I know just sponge painted with glaze on her fireplace bricks to lighten up the space. Worked great!
