How to install a sisal stair runner

Our aging labrador needs some more traction on the stairs, so we've ordered some sisal runner from Pottery Barn. What's the best way to install this so that it doesn't move and become dangerous: should we use staples? tacks? tape? a combination? Also, we have to cut around a square newel post on one side at the base of the stairs -- what's the best way to "finish" that edge so it's not obvious? We are using self-edged sisal, i.e. no binding, to minimize this, hoping that the cut edge will be flush enough up against the post that it won't really be very apparent, but maybe there's a way to tidy up the cut edge prior to affixing the runner? Also - any tips are very welcome!! Thanks
