Find a Tradeswoman

I am considering starting up a business to help people who wish to have a tradeswoman. I'm expecting this to be busy mums and single women as well as the elderly. However before I start putting money into a project I need to do some research, it would be great if you could help me out.

I just want to know how you feel about the idea, if you'd use it or if your a tradeswoman if you'd sign up, it would be free to join you would only have to pay us around 15% of your pay from a job you got through us. Any advise would be appreciated.

Thank you, Kate

Kate,

I can't remember exactly what the source for this was but I remember doing some research on the female contractor industry and found out that women owned contractor firms were the largest growing small business in the country.

The reason for it was due to the fact that there were so many women out there who'd bought homes on their own and preferred hiring a woman to do the job. They said they felt:
1. Safer giving the keys to their home to another woman
2. That their needs would be met when it came to the details
3. Their homes would be left neater after a day's worth of work than if it were a male contractor

Otherwise you may want to take a look at Angies List because they are recommending contractors and have been growing quite significantly in the past few years. They would probably be your biggest competition besides Service Magic.

Hope this helps,

Heidi

Find a Tradeswoman

Kate, I think it's a great idea. There are far to few women working the trades. I was a contractor for a few years and I hired women. They were easier to train than their male counterparts, and had a greater attention to detail. When you add to that the sexist attitude of most of the tradesmen who aren't about to let a "little girl" out produce them you have a very productive work environment. Another avenue you might look into is the government contracts. By law I believe 6%(don't quote me) are required to be issued to minorties. These contracts have what's called prevailing wage. It's a bit of a pain in the hind quarters for payroll, but the payscale is higher meaning the top tallent is attracted to it. Not a bad way to get going. Best of luck to you with it. Gerald
