groaning pipes

For the last week or so, whenever anyone in the house uses water, after it is turned off there is a pause and then all the pipes groan and thump for a few seconds. No other symptoms of a problem. I have an idea it has something to do with an "air buffer" pipe....but don't know where it is or how to fix it. Anyone have info? Thanks
