Are you like me and have a kitchen table full of homework, crayons, pencils and all that other great stuff that comes home from school? Then build an art and homework center for the kids and give them a place to keep all their supplies close at hand.
I actually did this for my boys, ages 5 and 7, by building a kid-sized crazy table. I took a Pine table top I purchased from a local home improvement center and cut a crazy shape with my jigsaw. Then added some legs (can also get pre-fab ones) and painted it with a crazy pattern and finished it off with three coats of polyurethane to make it virtually kid-indestructible.
I paired it with two pint-sized chairs and set it in a quiet corner of the living room. Next I cut some wood to length and installed a few shelves on the wall next to the table with shelving brackets. Finally, I bought vertical magazine holders and labeled them with the boys' names and decorated them with their favorite stickers and then filled them with their homework and artwork. Finally, I found really cool desk organizers made out of wood and put them on the shelves for their crayons and pencils and knick-knacks. Quick and easy and very basic woodworking. I am amazed by how much they love going there and spending literally hours coloring and creating!
What things have you done to give your kids their own work space?
