Cutting an electrical wire

Here's the scoop ... have an old, electrical smoke detector in my just-purchased home. It's above the door frame in the living room. And when I am lounging, quietly, trying to read the thing hums/buzzes. Feels like the fillings in my teeth are picking up radio signals or something, plus it fell off the wall the other day. There is quite a bit of wiring. I am assuming that I turn off the main, clip it off with rubber-handled wire cutters, but don't know what to do next? Close off the wire I know ... I was hoping to avoid the guys at the hardware store who sometimes look at me like I'm a duh-head and will burn the house down or something.

Hello ScubaG, If there is quite a bit of wiring like you say the smoke detector may be interconnected with other alarms so you might want to check. If not just cap the wire and use a battery operated detector. That is the quick and easiest solution. If you need more help just let me know. pgerm@jeromejoyce.com
