Are horizontal stripes to modern?

My husband and I live in a brick ranch that is approx 60 years old. We are trying to decorate our home in an eclectic manner without it being too modern. We dont' want the outside and inside to be two completely different worlds. We would like to paint our living room different shades of tan and were thinking of doing three horizontal stripes in different shades. Do you think that is too modern for our home?

I think horizontal stripes are just too confusing to the eye. I've seen vertical stripes done well. The trick is to use painters tape where you want the stripes, so you get them even. Here's a link I found that has some other good ideas. Good luck! http://www.oldhouseweb.com/stories/Detailed/12228.shtml

I'd go online and see how your style home was commonly decorated in that time frame. But really, it doesn't matter, as long as you're happy with your house. That's all that matters :-)

NO! Horizontal stripes are NOT to modern. They can be if the right colors are used, but with the colors you said you are using (3 different shades of tan), i think it will still have a ranchish look to it. If you and your husband think it will look good, you should go for it! Be bold! I am positive it will look good!
