Ghastly ceiling tiles

I am in the process of remodeling a room on the second floor of my house. Unfortunately, this room is where ugly went to die, complete with wood paneling, carpet with no padding, and ceiling tiles. My problem is that I do not know what to do with the ceiling tiles: they are very outdated. They are stuck on the ceiling with adhesive. I tried prying them off with a putty knife which only resulted in parts of the tile shredding off like cardboard. Also, I am now concerned that there may be asbestos lurking up there. Is it possible to buy new ceiling tiles and put them up over the old ones? I do not want to paint the current tiles.

You're correct in being concerned about asbestos. If you don't plan on hiring a professional asbestos removal company, I'd at least put a good sealant on it before covering it up with new tiles. Realize that any movement can release the asbestos fibers, including future removal of the tiles you attach to these ones. You could lower the ceiling and put up the new tiles in a framework to play it safe.
