Having a second floor addition done -- dangers and risks

We are having a second floor put on our house. The roof is off and they've begun with sistering joists and the subfloor...they warned us about "stress cracks" in our ceiling below where they are working which we've begun to see. Now, they tarped because rain came in, but we heard some trickling and now see some water lines on the ceiling... How great a cause for concern? If subflooring is already down over that area do we make them pull it up and let it dry out? How do we know if it will just dry out itself (our biggest concern is mold/mildew growing AFTER the addition is on). any other concerns we should be aware of/watchful for on our first floor while they are working above? Thanks!!! Melissa

That is something that can't be diagnosed from a distance. Hire a home inspection service to check everything out before everything is sealed up. Make sure that the work is being done to code and permits have been taken out. Are the footings deep enough for a second floor? The contractor's insurance should cover any damage that needs to be repaired.
