Replacing bathtub spout with shower knob

I need to replace the bathtub water spout but it has that knob on the end of it that turns the shower on. So I'm at a loss as to how to take this old one off. I thought perhaps if I took the overflow cap off that is just below it that it would show the bars that control shower on/off knob. But it doesn't. Nothing there but an overflow drain. Anyone have any clues? Thanks.

Slip-on or Threaded?

There are two styles of spouts. The slip-on spout has a small square hole in the back bottom that conceals an Allen Head Set Screw. If that hole doesn't exist, then your spout is threaded and just unscrews. If you have the slip-on type, make sure you check the "O"ring for wear or nicks and replace if needed.

But what about this shower

But what about this shower knob/rod this "IN" the end of the spout? The know is actually at the end of the spout, connected to a metal line that runs through the spout. You can't just unscrew the spout because of this knob and rod. I need to know how to unhook this in order to get the spout off. I have a feeling I'm going to have to cut a small in the wall behind the tub just to get to this.

If you can give me more

If you can give me more specifics as to the make and model number, I can get more information for you, but I've never encountered one that couldn't just be removed as I explained.

spout

Attached is a pic of the spout. (sorry, its sideways). Its a regular spout. No make or model number. But, the button that you pull out to switch over to "shower" is IN the spout. You cannot just "screw off" the spout because of the button. The button is attached to a bar that goes in the wall somewhere to switch the water from spout to shower.

Without any further information, I am totally unaware of any tub spout that isn't removed in one of the two ways I previously described.
