Painting Paneling

HELP....my husband and I have just bought this house with dark walnut colored paneling throughout. I need to know if there is something I can paint it with or something I can use to lighten it period. It feels like we are living in a cave.

my friend and I painted the paneling in her bedroom. We used a primer first (probably Kilz) then painted two coats of regular wall color with no problems. She changed it from the dark wood paneling to a pretty lilac color. It made a huge different in the feel of the room. I say go for it!

Has anyone painted paneling? The fake wood kind everyone had in their family rooms in the 1960's-70's? Any suggestions would be great! Thanks

It takes lots of patience and a good primer. Ask at a local paint store and they can direct you.
