Stop your toilet from overflowing

Clogged toilet

I have a big problem. My toilet is clogged and a plunger isn't working. Is there anything I can do? I am new at this do-it-yourself problems and don't have a lot of experience, but i am willing to learn. And I don't have any money to hire a plumber. My father-in-law was going to do it, but my husband and i had a huge argument with him and now we're not speaking. So, I need some advice on how to unclog it. Oh, and imagine what is inside and that will give you a better clue as to how I am supposed to unclog it. PLEASE HELP ME!!!

Have you heard of an auger..or snake. you get them at the hardware store. Go for the middle or more expensive one and have something to put the nasty dripping wet coil into. Yeah i have had all kinds of stuff stuck and i need new toliets . The new low flows are always clogged. Evan though I don't havea septic tank I occasionally put the enzime powder that they have for septics down each toliet it helps eat away any build up. I also find that if I keep my plunger in the bathroom the toliets knows I mean buissness.

The snake is a good idea but I would bet that if you took the plunger and quickly (about 2-3 times per second) pushed and pulled the plunger in and out around 10 times or so, it would dislodge whatever was stuck in the toilet. Try it again a little more aggressively if it does not work the first time. Of course many years ago, my daughter flushed all kinds of plastic toys down the toilet and they got stuck deep inside. I had to remove the toilet from the floor and take the toys out from the bottom. Hopefully that is not your problem, but if you have young ones, who knows. Now when the toilet does start to overflow, turning off the valve as the "Tip" above suggests, does absolutely nothing. If you check out the mechanics of the toilet, the water valve only controls the refill of the tank. Its small ¼ or 3/8 inch supply of water does nothing as compared to the 3" pipe that comes from the tank and immediately throws gallons of water into the toilet bowl. It appears to work only because the design of the bowl is large enough to be able to handle the entire storage tank supply without overflowing. However, if the bowl is clogged and the water level is higher than normal, a flush with a full tank of supply water will easily overflow the bowl even with the supply valve shut completely off. The only way to stop the overflow is to quickly lift the back off the supply tank and push the flapper valve shut before all the water leaves the supply tank. Not easy but it is the only way it works! Good luck! dswan
