Topic: Garbage Disposal isn't working
This worked! batchok writes: Sat, 03/24/2007 - 1:13pm
"If it is, then next step believe it or not, my mom taught me whenever ours was not working. You will need to put the handle of a broom into the sink and rotate it up against the inside of the disposal. You may need to apply a bit of force. What you are trying to do is to unlock a safety that's built into the disposal when it comes across something very hard to shut off so that it doesn't burn the motor out. Just make sure you turn off the disposal when you do this otherwise it will chew up your broom handle pretty good. Ours always looked like it had been a dog toy because my mother wanted to know when it was fixed."
Just tried the tip that someone else suggested and it worked!
If you open the bottom of RainSleeper writes: Sat, 11/18/2006 - 6:11pm
If you open the bottom of your sink, you'll see your disposal. Feel along the very bottom of it.
There should be a reset button down there somewhere and also a notch where you can insert an Allen wrench that will inable you to turn the blades manually from below.
I'll use the allen wrench (this happens often enough that I keep it handy), turn the blades back and forth a few times until they start to turn easily if something was in there, then hit the reset button.
Tada, it's fixed.
Hope that helps in your case.

Not too difficult

As for the first one, please forgive how mundane it sounds but I almost called my plumber before I checked this one...is it plugged in?

If neither of these work, then go for it and change out the disposal. To see the step by step instructions, we have an animated tutorial on the site to show you. Just click on the link below:
