kitchen cabinets with fake wood look applied to pressboard

You know the kind of ugly (after 28 yrs!) cabinets I am talking about. Most are in good shape except the ones exposed to sink splashes and sun...swelling peeling and wearing away at the edges. I need to overhaul my outdated and old kitchen but can't as a single mom afford the lovely new cabinets with real wood. Can a new front laminant like the ones that cover appliances be an option? I can't imagine paint will fix that one cupboard with all the sun damage. Anybody? Help?

Sounds like you're talking about veneer cabinets. They are a treat, huh!? :-) There are great paint products that give a beautiful finish for either wood or veneer ~ for VERY LITTLE money! Prior to painting, make sure you scrub them clean with TSP, use a fine sandpaper to rough the surface a bit. I also like to use a good gripping primer on veneer. Then give the cabinets 2 or 3 coats of a good acrylic paint ~ in any color(s) you like! (Go with the better quality paint for a few more dollars. Kitchen cabinets take a lot of beating, and the better paint will be worth it.) If you want to get more artistic about it, there are many decorative treatments you can easily do, including stencils or even wood icing. Or simply change out your hardware for a new look with the fresh paint. For more ideas, check out decorative painting books or google. You could take a door to your local home improvement paint center and get their opinion on products. Have fun!

There are both services and DIY kits where a new "skin" is applied to the front of your cabinets and doors. For a bigger upgrade, you can reskin the cabinet frames, and replace the doors new raised panel doors. As long as the underlying cabinets are sound, this will give you new looking cabinets for a fraction of the price.

As an economy fix, you can refinish the cabinets, restaining where needed and then urethaning everything to reduce future damage. You may be able to putty and sand minor veneer damage. But if you've got major peeling/splits/voids, you probably can't bring it back to a stain-grade finish. In that case, you'll have to either putty and paint, or go the refacing route.

One nice thing about the refacing option is that you get a new kitchen in one day. If you paint or refinish the cabinets, you're looking at your kitchen being out of commission for about a week, between prep'ing, finishing and drying.

I agree with ArtcPhartc. I recently redid cabinets in a mobile home. I sanded well and used a good primer and when the primer was completely dry I painted with acrylic (2 coats) paint. I only did the cabinet doors in a wine color which really worked with the fake wood look. Another tip: use a good 6" roller.
