furniture repair

Hi; How do you repair a crack in a wooden pedestal table leg? The crack goes all the way through the leg but the leg is still togeather and seems steady. The table also has leather inserts on the top. These are in need of help, any ideas or advise? Thanks Shirley

Hi Shirley, One thing you can try is glue and wood filler. Can you remove the table leg? If you can, it will make the job much easier. Sand the edges of the finish. Apply a generous application of wood glue to the pieces and clamp together. Once it has set up, I would give it about 24 hours, you can fill in any remaining crack with wood filler. If the leg does not seperate you may be able to get by with just wood filler. Once this has set up you can sand and refinish. If this does not work for you, try setting the leg together with long screws or with biscuits. Hope that helps. (Sorry, I don't know anything about leather inserts.)

I am not sure about the aesthetics when repairing a wooden piece of furniture. I guess another solution is to find that specific part and replace it. I very much depends on the furniture store, the type of wood and so on. I recently bought bedroom furniture and I was ensured that every single piece has high quality standards.
