Painting cement porch floor jlcatan writes: Fri, 05/25/2007 - 1:11pm
I have a covered porch that was painted with cement paint by the previous owner. However, they didn't seal it properly and the color beneath is showing through on the high traffic areas. It's a medium gray which I figure is a nice base coat for creating a faux stone design or a faux area rug. Do I need to prep the area as though it has never been painted, by cleaning and using an "etching" material first, or can I clean it, paint a design, and then seal it with something? If I never get around to the creative stuff, can I just repaint the high traffic area with the left over cement paint that's 3+ years old?

You should be able to paint right over the concrete and existing paint. For prep, you should pressure wash the area and make sure none of the existing paint is coming loose. If it is, make sure you get all the loose paint off.
You'll have to check the cement paint to make sure it hasn't expired. You may be able to call a customer service 800 number from the container. If you can use it, make sure you mix it really well.
After you paint the concrete try to get a penetrating concrete sealer. You may have to go to a paint store (instead of mega-home store) to get a good quality concrete sealer. The penetrating sealer will hold up better against wear in the high traffic areas.

What color to paint my front porch and sidewalk Mary Smith writes: Thu, 10/25/2007 - 9:26am
I have a tanish brick two story house. The brick has splashes of brown, burgundy, and (what looks like terra cotta). Dark brown siding on the porch ceiling and around our new full veiw burgundy storm door and a white metal door. We also have dark brown shutters. Do I paint the porch and sidewalk the same color? The porch has been previously painted and is coming off. Also the sidewalk concrete has been patched and the color is different. It needs painted also.
