Closet needs a light

My daughter's closet has no light. I would like to install one. Please point me in the right direction. Thanks.

You can wire a light in if you can get into the attic space above the closet, but there are certain code restrictions on space requirments. They make some really nifty lights that are LED's and battery operated and just touch on and off. The LED's last a long time and can operate cool.

Yes, there's attic space above the closet. I'd prefer an easier (lazier?) avenue, however! The battery operated touch-on-off lights don't seem to put out much light at all. How about those LEDs you mentioned? Thanks.

If you have an outlet near by you can install a hanging light. I installed one in my daughter’s closet and there is a switch in the cord to turn it off and on. I purchased it at Target and they are also available at Ikea and Wal-mart for around $12 dollars a kit without the light bulb. If you cannot find one with a switch in the cord there are wireless remote systems that allow you to control indoor or outdoor lights and electronics from up to 100 feet away. Found at target around $12.99 to $15.99. No hard wiring required. Hope this helps

The heat of an incandescent bulb poses a real fire risk in a clothes closet. Building code restricts closet lights to flourescent, except where there's substantial clearance from the nearest hanging rod or shelf. The specified clearances are such that they exclude incandescents in pretty much anything short of a walk-in closet. The lazy and safe solution would be a flourescent light on a cord, plugged into the nearest receptacle. But if you've got easy attic access above the closet, you could do a proper job and wire in the light in an afternoon. If you're lucky, you may have an accesible *unswitched* cable run in the attic (there are "proximity circuit testers" available for around $10 that tell you if a wire is "hot" just by holding the tester near the wire). Otherwise, you can bring power up into the attic from a nearby receptacle, and only have one small wall hole to patch. Run the cable into the front wall or ceiling of the closet (as near to the front wall as possible), install an "old work" junction box, and hardwire the flourescent fixture. I think the fixtures with a pull-chain switch are fine, but if you want to get fancy you can install a switch outside the closet.+

Well I think you should visit a furniture store you could find it most inspiring even for installing light in a closet, some of them have beautiful and different approaches, I am sure your daughter would love it.
