As a professional scenic artist/faux finisher, I can tell you the best way to use red is to have your primer tinted with the same color as your paint. The primer will be pink but the red paint will cover better. You can also purchase a grey primer and red covers that really well.
You will still need two coats of your base color but it will look great!
I painted my kitchen and dining area red and I love it.

Red is very difficult to work with because, with most paints, you don't get good looking results unless you use multiple coats, say four or five. If you believe that you can go to walmart and buy some sort of a one coat wonder, and get good results, then I have some interesting iron real estate in Brooklyn that I will sell you, real cheaply, too.
A better idea would be to start with a high quality product, like those available from Fine Paints of Europe, which has pigments ground so finely that you can achieve great results with two coats, even with a deep, bold red. For more information, please call us at 1-800-332-1556.

Using a grey primer is the best and possible to get away with one coat if using quality paint. This will work for any dark color.
