Best Foolproof Circuit Tester

I use a simple two lead tester to determine if the house current is really off to an outlet, fixture, j-box etc. Any reason to buy a fancy multi-tester?

I trust my life to a rather expensive multi tester, because you can have a considerable amount of backfeed on a neutral due to an unbalanced load or flourescent fixtures. Not all small two lead testers can measure this lower voltage. You need to check the power between the "Hot" and "neutral" leads and also check the neutral to ground. Be careful of other leads in the box, they can be from a differant circuit. There are many reasonably priced multi testers on the market, you don't have to spend the amount I did. I just do it for a living and need all the options.

Yes! I agree that a expensive multi-volt-ohm-meter is by far the most reliable tester then the electrician can use. But first I check the batteries by first turn it on, check the ohmmeter and make sure you can zero it, Next check the AC meter by inserted into a outlet and make sure you read the 120 VAC. Now your ready! I own a Fluke 75 Multimeter and I have an old Simpson Volt Ohm Meter that was used in 1969 and maybe tills it is old. It's a big black box weight in about 3 lbs. The Fulke weights .5 lbs.
